The Science Fiction story I was told about and never watched, til now: FIREFLY!

This series has an interesting history, because 14 years ago it was cut mid season by Fox. And then the (beloved) DVD came out and has been a staple that fans re-watch. There are only 14 episodes but pretty well each is packed with interest. Here are some of the original reviews:

Emily Nussbaum of The New York Times, reviewing the DVD set, noted that the program featured "an oddball genre mix that might have doomed it from the beginning: it was a character-rich sci-fi western comedy-drama with existential underpinnings, a hard sell during a season dominated by Joe Millionaire.

The Boston Globe described Firefly as a "wonderful, imaginative mess brimming with possibility". The review further notes the difference between the new series and other programs was that those shows "burst onto the scene with slick pilots and quickly deteriorate into mediocrity ... Firefly is on the opposite creative journey." Jason Snell called the show one of the best on television, and one "with the most potential for future brilliance".

It is easy to acquire because so many fans put it on the Internet.

If anyone has seen it I'd like to read what you have to say, though always remember that it's impolite to be rude to old people.

That is one I have never heard about, Went online and looked at the trailer. It says the series was from the year 2002.

Looks like it might be a soap opera type of series. I don't have too much interest in that sort of programming. :-)

What an odd thing to say Bill. That would make Star Wars and Star Trek soap operas.

Maybe you looked up the wrong Firefly, because the name has been used for other stuff rather than this show.

This is space, planets, battles, surviving, a crew on an old spaceship of the firefly category doing it's best against the oppressive universal government.

I haven't seen more than a couple of episodes, but my understanding is that's not a sci-fi soap opera. As Buster mentions, it's like a old-Western-show style, but the cowboys are the Firefly crew and the people they meet in the West. It had quite a cult-like following. I think Scott, or maybe cod3poet was a fan. Btw, Star Wars is referred to, I think by Lucas himself, as a space opera as opposed to sci-fi. Basically, like the stories of knights and wars on Earth, but in space.

There was talk of a reboot, but I don't think it's going forward.

Firefly is an amazing show from a very interesting era of TV. Few shows have as much of a cult following or desire for return as Firefly.

Nathan Fillion has went on to be famous in both Castle and The Rookie (plus others) where he famously pulls in Firefly in either scenes or cameos from stars. Early Castle had him wear his Captain uniform from Firefly with his daughter saying "Come on dad, give it up, that was so 10 years ago"

I think Brian is also a large fan.


I believe they just got green lit for an animated show.

Almost through Firefly and sad about that fact Scott. But I can watch it again in 7 months or so.

So I'm back. The more I research the more impressed I am.

I love this series. Still has a dedicated following. It's a  a character-rich sci-fi western comedy-drama with existential underpinnings. Many keep track of some of the best dialogue such as these:

"Ok Everyone, hold onto something. We're going to enter atmo and then ... explode."

"This here might warrant a bit of consideration."

"Well Jane the days of me not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle"

Well... You can't!

"Ten percent of nothing is—let me do the math here. Nothing into nothin'. Carry the nothin"

"Man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything"
