Picked up this on the web:

The other great thing about Gentoo is that you never have to upgrade to a new version.  Your install is already a custom distro, and every time you update or install new software the portage system keeps all the packages consistent - you never enter "DLL Hell" where package A requires version 1 of library L, and package B requires version 2 of library L.  And the system doesn't degrade every day until you finally reinstall the next version of your chosen distro.

I don't understand where Gentoo got the reputation of being for super nerds or people who want the ultimate in performance.  It's really for people who don't mind learning and need to be able to get the latest software without jumping through too many flaming hoops.  I use it because it's super easy to maintain and always at its best.

If you want to know more about the package management system for Gentoo, you might check this article on portage:

And of course, what Harry would use to handle Portage:

Good presentation on passwords and two factor authentication last night, Jason. Thanks for doing that. I'm looking forward even more to your Gentoo presentation!

Thanks, I may save Gentoo for September. It's more involved than I thought it was. Much more so than Arch was.

Bit off more than you can gent-chew it seems :) Gentoo is like LFS with a better roadmap.

Sorry I was unable to make the May meeting.  The power went of in Lindsay at around 1 pm and didn't come back on until after 8 pm.
I didn't want to leave the house without the hydro being on and I didn't have enough gas in the car and the gas stations would have been shut down due to no hydro.

Sorry to hear you lose power for such a long time, Bill. Understandable that you couldn't come under those conditions. Glad that didn't happen when the weather was cold.
