I just finished watching a 4-part series on the War of 1812 (named the same) on CuriosityStream. It was quite moving. I hadn't realized that in the 1980s, they unearthed the remains of American soldiers in the Niagara region. The bodies were repatriated and given fully military honours before being buried in military graves in the US. I also didn't really understand just how important First Nations were to the defence of Canada and yet we give them so little honour for helping to save out little country.

The war of 1812 is looked at in the US by many historians as the second war of independence and in Canada as the war that defined us as a nation. The destruction in lives that it wrought while not changing the borders an iota likely also led to our two nations never again going to war against each other or even defending our shared border.
