Samsung DeX on a PC or Mac

The residual question I am addressing here follows from my Samsung DeX presentation at our January PLUG meeting. According to this article, DeX running on a PC or Mac (as opposed to a monitor with just the phone plugged in like I demonstrated), only works with a Galaxy Note 10 or 10+. I did try running DeX on both a Mac and a PC on my Galaxy S9, and it didn't work on either. Not that I need it, but it would be nice if Samsung extends those functions to the models that run DeX on a monitor.

Thanks for the link - the article finally made me understand what DeX does when it's run from the PC to the phone. It lets you use the phone OS on the PC, right? As in you use your input devices on the PC and the monitor but the processing is actually happening on the phone?

I seem to recall you saying a while back that DeX was being discontinued? Is that just for the S9 models then? Will the S10 non-Note series have it or just the Note 10?

You have it right, Jason - the phone is in effect the PC. As far as DeX being discontinued, that is not correct. What is being discontinued is Linux on DeX, which allowed you to run Linux with your phone in DeX mode. I demonstrated that at the meeting with the only Linux image made for DeX, Ubuntu 16.04.

Hopefully, maybe someone at Samsung may see this posting and realise that there is an interest from people running Linux, to use DeX on their Linux desktop computer.

If somebody from Samsung even knew we existed, I'd be so shocked I'd pass out.

However, from some searching online, it appears there are some alternatives to DeX, even for Linux.
