Searching on the web didn't quickly explain how to upgrade my series 12 vmware on Win10 to series 15, which is the current release. (My Linux machine uses the series 15.)
It's an extremely difficult procedure :) :
#1. Download a new up-to-date vmware.
#2. Install it.
The install even tells you it's performing an 'upgrade'! And all my virtual machines were in place and worked flawlessly. Why can't all computer stuff work this easily?
Admin: I moved this topic as it's about upgrading the Windows version of VMware Workstation Player. The 'Articles, Tutorials and Tips' subgroup is specific to Linux & Android.
I wonder if 'Software Updates' in the Help menu would also upgrade a version from one release to the next or if it only "updates" as it says.
Virtualbox also does seamless upgrades, but as I recall, one can do this through Software Update of most major distros.

No. The update only works within a series.
Buster, could you edit your first post and change the title to, Upgrading VMWare For Windows. :-)
