Title: Ubuntu 18.04 gives good support to the newer AMD GPU's
Post by: fox on February 26, 2018, 01:39:12 PM
It uses Linux kernel 4.15, according to this article (https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-4.15-Changes-Week-One). As noted in another post, I can verify that 18.04 works with my R9 M290 graphics card out of the box (without any Grub modesetting modifications). If you have a relatively new AMD GPU and were having trouble with Linux because of it, you might want to try making a live USB from the latest Bionic Beaver daily build and giving it a whirl.

Cool! And since 18.04 will be an LTS version, any new hardware support you get will be there for a while.

I have a VM fired up for 18.04 in anticipation of the server release. The gnome fallback is nice and I am going to give it the old college try as a "thick" desktop replacement.

Thick? Your Microsoft Surface Pro laptop is anything but thick  ;)
