Title: Presentation ideas for March 2018 meeting?
Post by: Jason on February 11, 2018, 08:12:38 PM
Does anyone have anything they would like to present or demo for March PLUG meeting? Presentations don't have to be long affairs, even a 15-minute presentation on a topic you find interesting may be something other members would enjoy finding out about.

It just has to be Linux, Chrome OS or Android-related or cross-platform software that can be used on Linux.

How about making a quick program in JavaScript or some HTML, or using your favorite Blog software?

Or hardware you found out works with Linux?

How about your favorite Linux or open source websites?

Start thinking and see if you can come up with something either to present or give an idea of something you'd like to see presented and maybe somebody can do it.

Thanks!

Now that I have been playing around with Pop!_OS, I would be happy to make a presentation on it. I can show what it looks like from a live USB, and even go through an installation (or alternatively, show it installed). I would talk about the philosophy behind it, what is different between it and Ubuntu 17.10, and where it's going based on the System 76 interview I saw on youtube. I'm guessing it would take no more than 45 minutes to do that kind of presentation, and if someone else has something else to go with it, or something longer and more compelling, I'm happy to not do it or postpone it for another meeting.

That sounds great to me!

If I present this, I would like to do it on my Dell laptop, which unfortunately has a Broadcom wifi card. Do we have ethernet access in the presentation room or alternatively, does anyone have a wifi usb dongle that I could borrow for the presentation?

We have both options. The router has an ethernet port and I have a USB dongle that we know works with Linux.

Great. The USB dongle is probably the better option, as I don't have to be close to the router to connect. But I'm happy to have either..

If you want to test it with your Linux setup before the next meeting, I'll bring it to an upcoming MUG.

Sure; let's do that. Thanks.

Brian, you should do the honours and tell Fox(Mike) yay or nay. I'm also wondering if Bill wants to do a tax presentation at this meeting or the next one.

Yes,  I could do an income tax software demo,  as long as the driving weather is clear for that evening.

Monday is supposed to be above freezing, even at night. More likely to get rain than snow.

I would be happy to see what Mike has to show for Pop!_OS I did some testing as well and I like the interface for it's pretty near the smoothest frontend that I have yet seen.

So I'm perfectly okay with that as a presentation option, and if there is time left we can take a look at how linux can make you money (back) :)

Bill is willing to do something on tax software too (see above).

Got is from their web site:

Desktop operating systems have moved too far toward the casual user. We’re building an OS for the software developer, maker, and computer science professional who uses their computer as a tool to discover and create.

Is it a useful system for a sort of casual user like myself?

You might have to come to the meeting to find out :-)

I'm glad you brought this up. I think this has more to do with the small number of content consumption apps installed by default than any difficulty in operating the OS or installing any apps you want. I will address this in my presentation.
