Title: CBL-Mariner - Linux distribution created by Microsoft
Post by: Jason on August 28, 2023, 01:12:08 AM
Check this out:

I had no idea! Looks like even Microsoft recognizes that Linux is better for servers than Windows, at least for cloud services.

Thanks for posting the info and Link, Jason.
There are a lot of techno terms I didn't understand but you did point out it was about cloud services.

There are a few terms I didn't understand either. :)

This link (https://microsoft.github.io/CBL-Mariner/docs/) probably gives a better basic explanation which can be summed up as, "CBL-Mariner Linux is a lightweight operating system, containing only the packages needed for a cloud environment."

These kinds of systems are usually used to host specific enterprise applications so this distro's not something you'd ever use on a desktop except maybe to play with and learn from. It's text-mode Linux, as are most Linux server distributions.

It's all about containers and low level systems, considering the fact that you have a computer inside your vehicle managing your ECU, it doesn't need a gui, it does not need you to log into it to make a change.

Embedded systems should be fast, simple, and effective in what they do. Hence dropping down to lightweight operating systems. Or Containers.

CLI SHALL RISE AGAIN!

Yeah, I didn't want to get into explaining what containers are. I can hear their eyes glazing over already. But all hail the CLI, indeed! Back when men were men and wrote their own device drivers.

There you go, using those cryptic letter groups again. :-)
I had to google CLI to see what that actually was.

Sorry! It's like GUI but without the goo. ;)

Here I have a lovely image of containers running on a machine with a really Dense web gui wrapped around it and I cannot attach a photo. You'll just have to use your imaginations. Or check this out.

How big was the photo? There are size limitations for attaching. I can increase them (within reason). Or you can embed the photo by using a link to it on imgur or the like. 'Insert an image" on the icon menu at the top of your post box.
