Title: Tiny quotes
Post by: fox on December 13, 2018, 08:17:17 AM
I've noticed that when a message is quoted, the result is tiny text that is almost unreadable (at least with my eyes). Any way to fix this and make the quoted text larger?

I've noticed the tiny quotes also with my old eyes. I use copy/paste with quotation marks, and it, to me , is easier to read.

Can one of you guys give me a screenshot and let me know what theme you're using and I'll look into it.

I'm asking for this because the quotes don't appear to be me as being any smaller. Btw, not sure if you guys realize this but you can hold the Ctrl key and use the scroll wheel to size web pages up and down. I think that works in Firefox as well as Chrome. I use it all the time for many websites - my eyes aren't as good as they used to be either :) Not sure for Firefox, but Chrome will even remember what magnification you've used for a particular website.

"Not sure for Firefox"

Yes. Ctrl + Scroll works in Firefox

Works in Firefox for me as well; ctrl + does the same thing. But the regular text is fine as is; only the quoting text is small. I figured that there would be an easy fix; that's why I posted the query.

Thanks, Buster! If either of you could check in your user profile to see what theme you're using, that would help, too. It's under Profile -> Forum Profile -> Modify Profile -> Look and Layout -> Current Theme

Mine is forum or board default.

"check in your user profile"

Three of my systems never sign in, and I have never changed mine. So what I see is what every person sees who has no account. So I guess it's the default.

Not as easy as Ctrl-Scroll. This is the page I have to search through trying to find where the creator of the theme put the quotes settings. At least I think this is the page. On this screenshot, it shows the file, the far right shows the entire file and the little blue box at the top-right how much of the file we're seeing on screen. I thought I had found it, as it at least shows me a preview on this website when I change the file but the preview shows the quotes as being normal size after I made a change but then when I save that and look at various topics, it's back to being tiny again. I may have to change themes.

Do you guys not see this screen in your user profile? I circled what I'm looking for.

It should show you which theme you're on. Even if you haven't changed the default, I may have which is why I'm hoping you can check for me and the default only applies to new users unless I force it. That's why I'm asking.

As I noted earlier, my theme is "Forum or Board default". That's what is written to the right of "current theme".

That's... odd. Thanks. I just wanted to make sure you weren't telling me the time format :)

I've spent a couple of hours on trying to fix this and no luck so far. I recall trying to work on this before, too. I thought it was the theme style sheet but I changed the font size from x-small to small and though it showed in the preview, saving it didn't show a change.

So then I looked at the original theme thinking maybe there was style sheet code it was importing and not overriding and changed it there, too. Nope.

If anybody goes to any other forums based on SMF (usually says at the very bottom of the page) where the quotes don't appear as small, let me know where it is and I'll contact the administrator to see how they did it. I might sometime set up a fresh install of SMF on my own machine just to see if it's something that's normal or something specific to our forums. But'd I'd have to really bored :)

Thought of checking the forums provided by the people who make our forum software at simplemachines.org (http://simplemachines.org) . It looks like the quotes are smaller than regular text there, too. Here's an example (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=548841.msg3892658#msg3892658). But overall the text is bigger.

Interesting. I am now looking at our forums from Firefox in Linux Mint. My profile has the same look and feel setting, but the quoted text is larger. Go figure.

What were you using before? I reinstalled this theme as you might have noticed with the default logo of theirs in the upper-left. I checked the quotes right after (at least I think I did), and they were still smaller than the main text but now they appear to be the same size in both Firefox and Chrome in Kubuntu. I was tired when I was doing it :D

Buster, are you noticing a difference?
Title: Re: Tiny quotes

I was using Firefox on Ubuntu, which is what is on my home computer. I notice the difference in themes, and now the quoted text is the same size as the rest of the text.

Looks like the default theme changed, and along with that, the tiny quote text is back.

I haven't changed it since you last posted. Did anything change on your end (different browser, OS, etc?). Make sure (click on Change and force if you're not sure) it that you're using studioV1 as your Current Theme. If that doesn't work, try other themes to see if tiny quote text shows up there, too.

I didn't change anything (that I know of). Weird.

Have you checked to see if you can change themes to make doubly sure you're using the same one as me, Fox?

Buster, if you're reading this, can you tell us if you're still experiencing the tiny quotes?

Yes I can change, and am now using StudioV1

Not that I can tell. Quotes are normal size now, but they were as soon as the motif changed to this red colour, and that was before I changed the theme.

Okay, I'm really confused. You said the tiny quote text was back with the change in default theme. Then I suggested you change the theme. You did and I asked if it had any effect and you said no, but now you're saying it's normal sized and was before you changed themes.
So is the quote text a reasonable size now?
Title: Re: Tiny quotes

Some misunderstanding there. Quotes are normal size now, and they have been since the "red theme" (whether from default or StudioV1 because it changed in the former without my doing anything).

For me the red theme (well groomed?) has easier reading with the quotes, but unpleasant harshness in its overall look. I'm sticking with the default. (Obviously I have much keener eyes than Mike the Elder too.)

I will take a look at fixing the default theme, too - the quote text that is. Didn't know studiov2 was harsh-looking which is too bad since it uses the club colour. But if I can't fix it, sorry, I tried. Ctrl-Scroll is your friend or better glasses :)

I've even suggested months back that members suggest a theme they would prefer and I could make it available but nobody recommended anything.

There are two themes with red in them - the one that apparently looks okay with quotes is studiov1.

Yes, I see this on my tablet. That's a pretty good default, though I'm keeping my signed in account a calming blue

I finally can't stand the Default, red/maroon theme, anymore. :-)

I had to change the theme to a nice pale blue.  The smaller quote text size is no problem for me.

I will just be forced to log in to the Forums now, to get away from the default red theme. :-(

Okay, I think that must be my fault. I didn't actually change the option of what is the default theme, which is still Curve but I think I accidentally overwrote some code on Curve so now it looks like studioV1. Sorry about that and I'm going to try reset it. This might be why there has been confusion. I've been on studiov1 for years and didn't realize I messed up Curve.

Okay, fixed Curve, too - you may have to hold down the Ctrl key while pressing 'refresh' to see the fixed version, or just clear your cache. It has the tiny quotes but it's the default and I don't care enough to fix it. It's Christmas.

Very strange, the default PLUG Forum colour, when not logged in, is an ugly red, on my small HP notebook, running Mint 18.3.
On my desktop computer running Mint 17, the default Forum colour is a nice blue, when not logged in, as a user??

You probably just need to clear your browser's cache on LM 18.3 and then restart it.

Thank you Jason! That worked.

I am using Opera as a browser on my small HP notebook computer and I had the browser set to clear out all cookies, when Opera is shut down.
Obviously the cache or history wasn't being cleaned out, at Opera shutdown. I went into the Opera settings and selected to clear everything out.
