Update on my Brother printer scanner, yellow ink cartridge not seated, error message on printer display.

I ordered another single generic, yellow ink cartridge from Amazon.
Installed the cartridge and the ink cartrige not seated, error message went away and the printer started a print job, without problem. Yaaaay.

When using generic ink cartridges in the Brother printer, the printer display no longer is able to show how much ink may be left in the cartridge.

I think I will need to replace the other colour and black cartrodges in the printer, because the printing quality has been poor lately but I thought it was just the print heads that needed cleaning.
I think now, that the cartridges are just getting low on ink.

I still think it sucks that the Brother printer will not print black text, when one of the colour cartriges fail. :-(

General Discussion / Upgraded my Kodoo prepaid serv...
Last post by ssfc72 - May 02, 2026, 10:50:37 AM
I have been using the Kodoo (Telus) cell service for a few years now.
I have a prepaid monthly service of $20 (includes taxes) per month which gives me unlimited Canada calling and unlimited Internationally texting and 500 MB of 4G Data, per month.

My cousin just told me he got a much better 1 year prepaid plan at the Rogers(Chatr) store at the mall.

So I went to the Kodoo store at the mall and found out that I could get a 360 day prepaid cell service plan for $149 plus tax.
The prepaid plan is unlimited calling and texting and 30 GB Data (4G speed) per 360 days.

That is a much better plan than the $20 a month plan that I was paying.

The modern world is not designed to make sense. It's designed to move money to the wealthy and sell product.

Sorry about your problem.

General Discussion / Things keep on breaking :-(
Last post by ssfc72 - April 29, 2026, 12:00:17 PM
So not only did I have to install new updated Linux Distros on my 2 notebook computers, but now my Brother printer-scanner has quit.

I went to print out something yesterday and the printer said the the yellow print cartridge was not seated.
I followed the steps shown on the display and  removed the cartridge, then powered off the printer for 5 minutes and re-installed the yellow cartridge and was still told that the yellow cartridge was not seated.

So, ok I only had a black text document to print, so I set print job to just print in black.
The Brother printer still said the yellow cartridge was not seated and refused to print the black text document. Grrrrr.

That is ridiculous that the Brother printer would not print a black text document that I set to use only black ink.

" now I can access my university account from Thunderbird with the Owl add-on"

And it could have been something to do with Thunderbird.

Don't ask me why, but now I can access my university account from Thunderbird with the Owl add-on. I just tried this after upgrading my Ubuntu installation to 26.04 LTS. I'm not sure if this is due to a change in the upgraded Ubuntu, to a change the university made on its server, or something else. But this means I can continue to use Linux as a regular operating system. Glad I persisted.

Distributions / Ubuntu 26.04 upgrade
Last post by fox - April 26, 2026, 06:24:33 PM
Just letting folks know that I did the Ubuntu 25.10 to 26.04 LTS upgrade today without incident. I had to do it with the command line because the upgrade did not appear on Software Update yet. I have yet to have a problem with a Ubuntu upgrade and my experience goes back to Ubuntu 7.04!

Hiring in big companies seems to be for AI workers, whatever hiring there is. Got this from bnnbloomberg.ca.

Meta slashes 8,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, as Microsoft offers buyouts to 7%.

Here's a heartwarming quote from the news report:

"While an alternative to the sudden layoffs removing tech workers from peers like Meta and Oracle, the savings are likely tied to a similar industry upheaval that is requiring huge spending on the costs of artificial intelligence. Meta has already warned investors that its 2026 expenses will grow significantly -- to the range of US$162 billion to US$169 billion -- driven by infrastructure costs and employee compensation, particularly for the artificial intelligence experts it's been hiring at eye-popping pay levels."

Good luck with all that Bill.

And in my continued awareness of machine takeover, The Examiner today has a news report that spooks me out. The headline is

BMO executive wants every client to have an AI concierge.

With a chatbox, bill paying, e-transfers, maybe even investment advice could be handled by AI.

I don't like the idea of distancing myself from those processes. With any investments I like to look at the numbers and consider options and pitfalls. And it is software we're dealing with, and we know how that can break our hearts from experience with our computers.

I prefer dealing with knowledgeable people.

Right on, Buster.

I am about to post a couple of topics.
Been busy installing an up to date fresh install of Mint 23 on my Dell 14" Inspiron notebook.I was using Mint 20, way past end of support.
Details to follow in another post

Also an up to date fresh install of MxLinux 25 on my Dell 13" XPS notebook.
The XPS running MxLinux 23, out of the blue, started to fail to boot up the Distro.
The boot up, got to the point of the desktop splash screen loading up and then it went into a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
Turns out this seems to be a common problem.
I wasn't messing around with the Distro, the notebook just all of a sudden would not boot?
Details to follow.
