This is a good Link to an interactive map of the solar eclipse on April 8.Cobourg is south enough to just be able to see the the eclipse as a Total eclipse.Start time around 2 p . Finish around 3:30 pm
Clear skies. :-)
Edit - There will also be a comet in the sky, during the time of the Total solar eclipse. It will not be bright enough to see by looking for it, during the eclipse, but with a camera taking a wide angle picture of the eclipse, it should show up on the captured image. The comet will be near Jupiter.
I was going to ask you if you had any plans to go to Cobourg to see it, Bill. I bought some eclipse glasses. I plan to go even if it's by my lonesome. None of this partial eclipse here,Cobourg is too close to miss out on a total eclipse.
I will be going to the Cobourg beach. That is where I went for the last total solar eclipse back in the 1980's.
However, knowing our cloudy/rainy weather that we have in our area, I sort of expect the day of the eclipse will probably be socked in with clouds/rain. :-(
I hope the weather is good but you're likely right. No road-trips to Texas, then? ;)
If you do go down, maybe I can get a ride with you? We could work out the details over email. I can throw in for gas.
Hi,
This Cobourg is next to Port Hope, right?
Can I join you guys?
I'll bring my welder goggles.
Hi William. Yes, Cobourg is just a few kilometers East of Port Hope.
With the cloudy/rainy weather we have in April, in Ontario, I won't be surprise if the clouds/rain prevent the viewing of the eclipse.
I will send you an email the day before the Total eclipse, if the weather is likely to be ok, for the viewing of the eclipse.
clear skies :-)
Hi Jason, I may be taking my motorcycle to Cobourg, to view the eclipse. There may be a lot of vehicle traffic in Cobourg on the day of the eclipse and the motorcycle would be easier to find a parking space. :-)
If I do take my car I will email you the day before, to let you know that I could give you a ride to view the ecplise.
In Peterborough, the solar eclipse will be very close to a Total ecplise. There will be just a very, very thin slice of the sun visible, at totality, 3.22 pm.

I'd be willing to join you on your motorcycle if you chose to take it and have a spare helmet. I just wouldn't tell my wife. :D Hopefully, it's not too cool that day.

I've read that Niagara Falls has a total as well. (Check first.) If you drive yourself, would that be easier? 404, 401, 403, QR I think. Something like that.
Yes, I can go to any parking lot along the Lake Erie shoreline. We'll see, weather being the deciding factor.

Part of the magic of a total eclipse is the fact that it gets night time dark. Streetlights may even come on. This would happen no matter the weather.
The Planetary Society, which I like to mention every time I can, had some information and other links about the upcoming eclipse here:
https://www.planetary.org/eclipse
You can get a pair of deluxe special edition pair of glasses from them although they're a bit expensive. But it helps the non-profit and they're cool. Being a poor man, I had to get a pair from Temu.
Hoping for clear skies.
Be careful with those solar viewers from Temu, Jason. Anything from Temu is highly suspect as being poor quality or fake.
For safe viewing of the eclipse, so you don't damage your eyesight, those cardboard solar glasses should should have an approved ISO number, which verifies they are safe to use, to view the sun.
It has been found that there a lot of those cheap cardboard solar viewers that have bogus/fake ISO numbers printed on them.
The AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force, has a list of verified suppliers of solar viewers, where the safe and genuine viewers can be purchased.

Thanks, Bill. The Planetary Society website also has the same suggestions and an approved list of sellers. One of the tips to check for safety is to wear them on a sunny day and note if you see anything. Looking through them is impossible. Looks completely reflective on the outside, black as space from the inside. But thanks for the warning.
Just to be safe, I ordered a cheap pair of Eclipse glasses from PPE Supply (https://www.ppe-supply.com/). They're a Canadian company and were on the list of approved dealers. While Temu's products are generally good, I should be more careful. I wouldn't rely on dollar store medical masks so I shouldn't trust anything health-related from them, either. Thanks for reminding me of this, Bill.
The cost was $16 for a pair of cardboard glasses and shipping was $10 for Expedited Parcel. They also sell masks so I grabbed some while I was there. They have Canadian and imported varieties of masks and are fully certified by Health Canada to ensure those imported also meet the standards.
Long range weather forecast says, "Mostly Sunny" for Cobourg and Port Hope area, and "Mostly Cloudy" for Toronto, Niagara, and Lake Erie side.
Fingers crossed! I received my eclipse glasses today along with the masks. Both appear to be good quality. I shared a link to the website here and on Facebook and somebody ordered. If it was from here, thank you! They gave me a $5 discount on my next order. I didn't even know they did that.
Apparently Port Hope, which is a bit closer to Peterborough and Lindsay, will have totality for about one minute. Parking will almost for sure be a problem wherever you go.
Niagara has declared a state of emergency because of an expected one million visitors.

It's kind of weird. I haven't seen such excitement about an eclipse before. Maybe it's because it's covering such a huge swath of the US and Canada.
The weather forecast for Cobourg (https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/ca/cobourg) shows about 85% cloud cover around 2 pm.
Probably I will not travel all the way to Cobourg, to try and see the Total eclipse. I will just stay here in Lindsay and see if the partial eclipse is visible.
Here, Monday will be cloudy with 40% shower. So, I'll watch via online. Is there live YouTube channel or government site?
"watch the eclipse on the Internet" in a search engine should get you many available sites. Just checked.

The weather report is disappointing. The best place to watch a partial eclipse is in Alberta this time. You better start now, Bill! ;) Even in the US, they're not expecting clear skies through most of the path.
I'd still be interested to see the nature changes in the darkness so if anyone else is going to Cobourg or anywhere along totality, please let me know. Message me if you need my phone number.
3:15. Blue sky around sun. Dull light still. Turned on 2 lights in house. Appears to be heading towards dusk. Surprised me.
Can't check sun coverage. No proper specs.
STREETLIGHT across the street on!!! Eerie. 3:22.
Streetlight off 3:26. Street lights farther along never came on. And now a few mentally challenged birds are singing the way they do in the morning.
Whole thing more noticeable than I thought it would be, partly because I had to put a kitchen light on while I cooked.
Blanket of dark clouds. Fortunately, a light patch of cloud passed in front of sun, just in time. Yeah, I saw the partial eclipse through the cloud. Street lights and solar lights came on, and few birds sang.
The first half of the eclipse was beautiful, here in Lindsay. Then the clouds rolled in solid, at mid eclipse and that was the end of it.
I saw an excellent image trough my telescope with solar filter. I was unfortunately, not able to get my digital mirrorless, Sony camera to get any pictures using the camera lens or through the telescope. I was unable to get the camera to produce a focused image. :-(
At mid eclipse it got quite dark, outside.
I wonder if Cobourg saw anything? The radar was indicating rain and the satellite cloud cover was showing pretty solid cloud cover.
Edit. 4 pm Lindsay, ON The clouds have cleared off and the eclipse is now visible again, for it's last part of it's cycle. :-)
You were lucky William. Where were you at the time?
Quote from: buster on April 08, 2024, 04:02:04 PMYou were lucky William. Where were you at the time?
At home in Mississauga where it only gets a partial eclipse, but close enough.
Here's (I hope) a time lapse through the partial eclipse in Peterborogh:
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/weather/topstories/time-lapse-peterborough-ont-during-the-total-solar-eclipse/ar-BB1lhS2M?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=ACTS&cvid=bced65eede3448f38c25342794b07830&ei=14#
I saw it for about 15 minutes before the clouds covered it. It was about 1/3 coverage then. Many people on the street checked it out with glasses. One person looked without any. There's always one. I found out later that I committed a risky faux pas. I viewed the eclipse with binoculars (while wearing glasses, of course). It was hard to find it because it was so dim. Almost two weeks later, my eyes feel fine. However, I don't recommend it.
About the time of maximum partial coverage (96%), I saw it briefly during a break in the clouds.
It doesn't show up in photos well, but in spots where the sun normally shines through between leaves, you could see crescent shapes instead. Neat. I didn't notice any change in the birds. I thought I did but after talking with my wife, I don't think they did. Your mind can convince you of anything if you expect it. I noticed the streetlights coming on briefly, too.
