Wow, this 35 year old guy a got 7 year conviction for his ransomware attacks in Canada and then stood trial in the US for his attacks, there.

These ransomware gang members have to be among the lowest dregs of society. The judge even gave a longer sentence than the prosecution was asking for. Good for him. The CBC article notes that he had a proper upbringing, education, and no financial pressures. There was no reason for him to turn to this other being an all-around horrible person.
