The movie and audio book is based on an actual hijacking of a USA cargo container ship and the resulting kidnapping of the ship's captain by the pirates in 2009.

The movie starred Tom Hanks and the audio book, A Captains Duty, was by Captain Phillips.

There was some controversy over the factual events of the incident, by the some of the ships crew.
The movie promoted Captain Phillips as a hero for offering himself as a hostage, to the kidnappers, in place of the kidnappers shooting one of his crew members.
Some of the crew members said that incident never happened.
The crew did capture one of the pirates, on the cargo ship and there was to be an exchange of the Captain, with the captured pirate.
However, the kidnappers kept the Captain as a hostage.

The US sent their warships after the pirates, who were taking the Captain to Somali, in a lifeboat from the cargo ship.
The US Navy tasked their SEAL commandos to get Captain Phillps back, before the pirates got anywhere.

I downloaded the audio book  from the Lindsay Library using the Overdrive service.
The audio book is much more detailed in what happened, according to Captain Phillips.  I highly recommend listening to the audiobook.
