And here are a list of others in no particular order. There's a couple of DNS providers that, while they don't encrypt your traffic, they can get past geolocking.

These aren't recommendations. I have no experience with any of them. Best to search online for reviews and personal experiences or just try one or several. Lots of them have 15 or 30 day offers to try for free. Warning that you may need to give them your credit card number even for the free trial and be sure to cancel before the renewal date comes up.

I just got an offer for VPN Unlimited, for $US 34 - lifetime. I found a favourable review of it here, but I never heard of cloudwards.net before. Anyone have any experience with this outfit? Worth paying for?

I'm assuming you're asking about VPN Unlimited not Cloudwards? In any case, I haven't heard of either of them. Note that VPN Unlimited appears to be, ahem, limited to a single device at a time unless you buy the extended plan for twice the price for a year unless you have some other special deal.

PIA gives you 5 devices for half the price. That doesn't mean you can't install it on multiple devices (AFAIK), just that you can't simultaneously use it on more than one advice. So that's the downside. But it's a great price even if they go out of business in 6 months! :D

They have a Linux client and a seven-day money-back guarantee.

PIA wasn't on your list, but I looked it up. Cost: $US 72/year.

PIA isn't in the list because it was in the list in the presentation notes. Check again. It's $40 a year.

Yep, I see that now, but I could swear that when I looked at it this morning it was much more expensive. Is this what you are using?

You may have been using your Mac, when you saw that higher price, for the VPN service. :-)

I am using PIA and it was around $36 USD/yr, when I paid for it last Fall.

Yes, I use PIA all the time, on my two computers, my phone, and my tablet. You might have been looking at the six-month rate and multiplied it by two perhaps?

For those that didn't see the presentation, the address is http://privateinternetaccess.com .

The lifetime deals look great honestly but I wonder how they can stay in business.

I notice at the VPN Unlimited site they list a bunch of publications and if you click on the logos they will take you to reviews. Might be biased links. The Tech Radar review mentions that not all the VPN servers allow torrents, for example.

I just noticed that as part of the same deal, VPN unlimited offers a 3 year subscription for $US 19. That might be a better way to go than $39 or $34 lifetime because it would be an inexpensive way to find out if it's any good. The single device at a time, is not a limitation I would be overly concerned about, as I don't use multiple devices on the internet at the same time. Marilyn does use a Mac in the house at the same time as I use a Linux box, but I don't see her doing anything for which a VPN would be of great benefit.

I don't subscribe to Netflix, so I don't have any answer for you.
I have also heard, that a lot of the VPN's are now, not working at accessing the U.S, Netflix service.

I definitely don't know of any lifetime ones (with reasonable bandwidth) but I have discovered through trial and error that the 'US Texas' VPN server that Private Internet Access is using right now isn't blocked by Netflix, at least not yet. Obviously, I don't expect to this to last though it has been working for a few months.
