New PLUG Year, New President

Announcement for first PLUG meeting from July 25, 1999

For a bit of history, PLUG started as a SIG (special interest group) connected to the now-defunct Kawartha Computer Club. I believe the SIG started sometime in 1998 but the earliest announcement I can find is dated July 25, 1999. At that time the Linux SIG met weekly! Later in the year, it became a separate user group, Peterborough LUG or PLUG as it became known later. So that puts us at almost 20 years old or 19 years old if we go back to when PLUG officially started. Above is that annoucement.

We've met at the Peterborough Native Learning Program, member homes, the Zoo, the library, E-LAN Games, Genesys Consulting, Pipcom Internet, and for years now, Applewood Retirement Residence. Over the years, we've had a couple of hundred presentations on Linux by developers, system admins, college and university teachers, retired high school teachers, product managers and enthusiasts. Though still a small group, we started out with only 3-4 guys including myself and we are one of the few active Linux User Groups in Ontario.

For those that were unable to attend the PLUG meeting yesterday, I announced that I am stepping down as president and long-time member Bob Foley will be talking over the reigns. Bill Hopkins will be continuing as Vice President. I will likely continue moderating the forums.

I've been doing this for a long time and it's been a great experience but it's time for somebody new. I'm very appreciative of the support I've received from you all over the years and have very much enjoyed your wisdom and your company. Rest assured, I will still be regularly attending monthly meetings and lots of MUGs, too.

It's been both a privilege and an honour to be your president and now please join with me in giving Bob all the support you can muster and wishing him the best success as the new Prez!

September 2017 PLUG Meeting: Linux Mint 18.2: THIS MONDAY!

Linux Mint 18.2

Linux Mint 18.2 will be presented by Jason Wallwork. Suitable for beginners, he will show you how to get Linux Mint and install it on your computer, using a USB thumbdrive. But before doing that, he will talk about what makes Linux Mint different, the different versions and how to choose one for your computer, and demonstrate the install. Finally, he will show it in action and the new features in this point release. This would be a great presentation for you advanced users to bring a friend that isn't sure about Linux but would like to try it. Hope to see you there!

Date: Monday, September 4, 2017 - 7 PM

Location: Applewood Manor
1500 Lansdowne Street West, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
Parking is on the east (right) side. Entrance is at the front of the building. From the front, go down the hall to the right, and enter the last door on the left.
