Serious Linux vulnerability found (and patched)

This is a little confusing, especially their headline, but apparently there has been a serious vulnerability in the Linux kernel that allowed unprivileged users (i.e. any user) to run exploit code that could give the user root privileges. The most likely vector would be a website that passed along the code in a web browser, I guess.

Linux Kernel 3.0 RC Release

According to ITWorld, Linus Torvalds has announced the 3.0 release (release candidate, really) of the Linux kernel. He goes to great pains to point out this isn't a dramatically new kernel. It's basically, the next point release of the same kernel. He just though that 2.6.40 was getting a little bit unwieldy.
