An interesting indictment of the Canadian News Media:

Good blog by this former journalist.  I think that most if not all of what he says is true.  Thanks for posting this, Paul.

Really interesting post. So much of it comes from companies that put the priorities in the wrong order. They make profit the only or ultimate goal with everything else coming second. Instead of saying, here is what we want to do, let's see how we can make money at, they say how can we make money with news. And then they wind up spending all their time talking about celebrities or the latest gaffe some politician made instead of what actually talking about what's important. And they think they will make money when in reality, if everybody is covering the royal visit, to use an example, they will only get a fragmented audience. How about talking about other important events so those of us who don't give a shit about an inbred family of inherited wealth and privilege have something to watch? Gah!

And as far as that goes, instead of travelling around Canada, why don't the royals actually do something while they're here? They were surveying damage from Alberta Wildfires. How about picking up a shovel and helping clean up? Heck, they could even fund raise for various organisations instead of just letting us enjoy the privilege of their company. I'm sure the Prince and his wife are fine upstanding people, why don't they show it?

I agree with much of what he says, but after reflecting on it, methinks he doth protest too much. One of the highlights of my day is still to watch The National at 10 followed by the CTV news. Sure, only the prettiest faces get to be anchors, but Rex Murphy puts the lie to the assertion that only pretty faces get on TV. To some degree, the Public itself is to blame. From what I can see, Will and Kate are enormously popular and that in and of itself is a story. Not having a TV in your house is no solution; using it wisely is.
