Manjaro Review @ Freedom Penguin

Interesting and thorough review of Manjaro here. Also includes a couple of videos with the review. It's refreshing to read reviews that don't just hype distros.

I had Manjaro (XFCE) on my Acer for several months when it was around version 0.8.4. Very nice looking, fast, customizable and as I recall, pretty good on battery use. It was the first time I had ever tried an Arch-based distro, and I liked the fact that it made it much easier to use than Arch because I didn't have the time and inclination to study the manual just to get a basic installation. I also liked the fact that it did some "pre-screening" of updates so that while it was rolling, the rolling was somewhat controlled. Unfortunately, I eventually hit an update that left me unable to boot up. I'm sure that I could have figured this out with the help of their friendly forums, but this never happened to me before with any Debian-based distro I tried. So I wiped the partition and put something else in its place.

I thought about trying it again from time to time, but this review is a reminder that there is an elevated risk of messing stuff up with a rolling distro. I haven't tried one since, and other than Remix OS and openSUSE, I haven't put a non-Debian based distro on my laptop since. Incidentally, Chris Fisher of The Linux Action Show is really big on Antergos, which is very similar to Manjaro but without the pre-screened updates. (I haven't tried it.)

I don't recall the exact reason but I encountered some bug that made me stop using it, too. It happened after a batch of updates, of which there are soooo many. It was elegant and fast but perhaps not ready for production use unless you're prepared to solve occasional bugs. I'd like to try Antergos and see if it works better.

Please do and make a presentation on it. I don't know anyone else who has tried it.
