Dropbox icon missing in Mint 17.3

Forums:

Anyone else finding that when starting up Dropbox from the menu, in Mint 17.3, that the little icon that always shows up in the Taskbar in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop, is no longer showing up???
This is on my Acer Notebook.

Without this icon, you can't access the various Dropbox services and you can't tell if Dropbox is being updated with your current files in Dropbox, other than I can see the hard drive activity light flashing, so I know Dropbox is doing something.

I think I was on some web page about Dropbox where there was numerous review comments showing other people have also been having the same problem.
This problem only started ocurring recently. Before, the taskbar Dropbox icon worked well.

UPDATE! I just did another Google search of the problem and found one part of the problem.

Somehow the System Tray had got turned off??? You just need to right click on the bottom right, on the Taskbar, click on "add applets to panel", scroll down the list to "System Tray" and there should be a green dot to the left.
If the green dot is not there, right click on "System Tray" and click on "add to panel"

However!!! The Dropbox icon is now showing, but it is still not functional. :-( :-(

UPDATE 2 - here is the solution

Bob has also had problems with Dropbox in Mint. Btw, which version of Mint are you using? Cinnamon or MATE? Just curious if it's related to the particular desktop environment.

Good point, Jason. If you run Gnome in Ubuntu, you won't see it on the desktop. It's there, but in a little tab you have to click on. At least that's the way it worked in my installation where I have a bottom panel added through Gnome Shell Extensions. Eventually, I found another Gnome Shell extension that puts both dropbox and insync icons (the latter was also missing from panel) onto the top panel.

I am running cinnamon on my Mint 17.3

I knew you weren't running Gnome, but I posted #3 just to make the point that it might be there but hidden, and there might be setting related to your panel that would expose it. I don't know enough about Cinnamon to tell you where to look, but if I recall correctly, Cinnamon is either related to Gnome shell or shares some of its libraries.

Also, I did a Google search for "dropbox indicator missing from cinnamon", and came up with all kinds of stuff. One posting for an older version of Mint suggested a fix - see https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/3j6wtt/dropbox_system_tray_i.... Might be worth a try for your version if you haven't already.

Yeah... I read some reports from 2010 (??) that there was a problem with Dropbox in Cinnamon, which was supposed to have been fixed. Still wasn't, Mike pointed out my confusion when the sync on my phone didn't match the one on my 11" netbook. So I wrote a little Bash script which fixes the problem, in my case at least. If you're interested, let me know; it's not complicated, but it may be unnecessary...

To wit, I just finished a HUGE resync of my Dropbox and USB support keys, and I took note that Dropbox has been updated to 3.16.1, IIRC. And of the fact that I didn't have to run my script to provoke the Dropbox icon to appear in my system tray (a misnomer, actually; that's what Windows calls it...)

It *may* just be fixed - FINALLY?! <^8#
