Remix OS

This looks like a very interesting distribution; somewhat like Android x-86 but designed more appropriately for a computer. The folks who developed it are apparently ex-Google employees. The website for this distro is here:

.
The distro runs on a usb stick and even comes with a unetbootin-type PC application for transferring it to usb. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make this work. I've tried several times from a Windows 7 Dell. The app indicates it is successful, but the resulting usb won't boot. This is unfortunate because I was hoping to demo this at the next meeting. I'm wondering if one of our more accomplished gurus could try getting this distro onto a usb.

Installed fine and runs well for me, from the USB Thumb drive (Requirements say USB 3 but I just used a USB 2 Thumb drive).
To install on the USB Thumb drive, using WIN 7, you need to right click on the install .exe file and chose Run As Administrator.

Wifi setup was easy, but trackpad scrolling doesn't appear to work. I had to use, page down and page up, to navigate the screen.

Thanks, Bill. I tried their usb installer; didn't know about the "exe" file. I'll try it your way next. Which version did you install and run, Legacy or UEFI?

So how do you like it, other than the trackpad issue. Funny that. Someone installing it on a MacBook Air ran into the same problem. Hopefully they will fix it in the next update.

By the .exe file, I am referring to the .exe you get, after you extract the files from the .zip download. I believe you get 3 files extracted from the .zip file, and the file to install the .img file, to the USB thumb drive is an .exe install file.

I downloaded the Legacy zip file.

I only played with the OS, a little bit. The Browser worked well, the movement of the notebook trackpad cursor was extremely sensitive. The cursor was hard to position on the screen.
The OS worked much better than Android X86. I believe Remix OS is Android 5.0.

Apparently you have to side load the Google Play Store onto the OS, in order to be able to download any Apps.

Thanks, Bill. I'll try this. Speaking of Android X86, a new rc version was just released:

Well I tried it your way on a laptop running Windows 10, but the result was the same. The install file runs, slows after 14 of the 15 files are installed, and several minutes later, it claims that the installation is successful and that I can reboot. But when I do so and choose the USB stick, it refuses to boot indicating that there is no operating system. I don't know what is going on, but if you can, Bill, come to Tim's on Monday night and bring your laptop and USB drive. I can then try to boot from your drive and you can try to install the program on my USB drive.

Ok Mike, it does sound like the install to your USB thumb drive, went as it should.
The weather forecast looks ok for Monday evening, so I might be able to make the Monday Mug.

I'm beginning to wonder whether I have bum USB sticks but if so, it would be two of them. I'm saying this because I had trouble, not only with Remix OS but also Deepin 2016. Bill, if you bring your laptop I'd like to have you try installing Remix OS on my USB, as well as to try your USB on my laptop.

As we determined in PLUG MUG, there was something weird in the setup of my USB sticks. Once that was fixed, the live USB worked, at least in my Toshiba laptop and my Dell desktop. Runs particularly slow on the latter; maybe because it's on a very slow USB2 stick? It booted but didn't run on my Intel CULV Acer; also on Bob's AMD laptop, so it seems to need a "standard" Intel processor in its current alpha state. Apparently there is a 2.0.1 update, which I will try.

The main task is to get the Google Play Store installed. Without that, there aren't many programs to try.

OK, I managed to install a bootable, EFI version of Remix OS to a USB thumb drive (USB3), from a USB3 port on my new Intel I7 Dell Inspiron notebook computer which has Win 8.1.

Upon booting Remix OS from the thumb drive, I chose the Persistance Option, instead of the Legacy Option because I wanted to try and get the Google Play Store App, installed on the Remix Distro.

During the very first Persistance boot, it takes a very long time to for the Partition process to complete (you could actually go a make a coffee, it takes that long) and again, there was another process, during the very first boot, that took a very long time to complete. The install onto the thumb drive, reported a thumb drive speed of over 20 MB/s (on another USB2 thumb drive, that I installed Remix, it said that thumb drive was only capable of 4MB/s).

After this very first boot of Remix from the thumb drive, all further boots of the Remix OS, went very quickly.

Upon booting into Remix, the Dell notebook trackpad did not have any cursor on the screen. Fortunately the Dell has a touch screen so I was able to navigate and operate the Remix OS without a problem.

I had a great deal of difficuly getting the downloaded and install of the Google Play Store App, to function properly. The Play Store would not download any Apps that I tried.
This was a common problem, from the comments that were posted and some tips were provided to correct the Play Store from not being able to download other Apps.
This is were I ran into difficuly, working though the various tips, to correct the Play Store problem.

In the end, I did get the Play Store working and I was able to download and get an App to work.

As an interesting note, upon booting up Remix OS, the Android X86 Title is shown on the computer screen.

Bill, were you using the latest update of Remix OS? How did you fix Play Store problem? I am very interested in Remix, but I might leave it until updates fix the problems you and others are experiencing (specifically, Play Store and trackpad). Incidentally, I read in one account that using a mouse on a laptop works well when the trackpad doesn't.

Do bring your Remix USB stick to the next meeting. I'd like to try your version on my Toshiba.
