Terry Brooks The Shannara Chronicles on TV

Forums:

Terry Brooks is an author I read at least a quarter century ago, and I used to enjoy the worlds he created. This fantasy series was filmed in New Zealand, as Lord of the Rings was, and may appeal to the same audience. Dangerous quests etc.

Anyway, the new series starts on CTV Wednesday and will probably also be available at the usual sources.

I read the Sword of Shannara in high school and again in my 20s. I really enjoyed it, obviously, though I haven't read any of the other books in the series. I believe each book is stand alone though it's in the same world. I heard they were making a tv series, didn't know it was complete. Should be interesting.

I watched the first four episodes. Bottom line is that I like it. It's a bit campy at times but the scenery is beautiful, and I don't mean just the Elven structures and nature views. The young women in it are gorgeous, too. Therein lies a bit of the campiness - fantasy isn't normally packed to the gills with characters you'd more expect to see on Beverly Hills 90210 - young, energetic and gorgeous. Thankfully, the can act well enough that they seem believable even with some of the poor dialogue (I mean the over-user of humour). But I'm a crusty old cynic, so what do I know? Still worth seeing and enjoying and not full of gratuitous sex and violence like many fantasy series. The sex is there but it's not graphic and so is the violence, but it's not over-the-top either. This is a series even a family can enjoy together. I give it an 8 out of 10.
