CDsThe Globe and Mail has been running a fascinating series on file sharing, the ipod and copyright issues. The first article is about Napster, which turns 10 in June. Here's a taste:

“Shawn Fanning never meant to change the world, it just kind of happened.

It was January, 1999, and the 18-year-old freshman gazed out the window of his cousin’s car as they drove the 40 minutes from Hull, Mass. to Northeastern University in Boston. It was the end of a long weekend and he was lamenting his return to school. While at home he’d made some headway on a piece of software he’d been working on since school started and like anyone consumed with building something from scratch, he wanted to finish it.”

Small ISPs fight ruling that let Bell throttle internet speeds

ArticleWe first found out just over a year ago that Bell was throttling Internet speeds for certain traffic particularly torrents and P2P applications. And it wasn't just for their own customers but the customers of any other ISP (i.e. DSL providers) reselling Bell's service branded under different names. These smaller ISPs, weren't impressed and sought redress by the CRTC but the CRTC ruled last November that the practice wasn't discriminatory. They're challenging that ruling. This time aother associations besides CAIP (Canadian Association of Internet Providers) have applied for an appeal of that ruling, arguing that the CRTC didn't understand all the technology behind their November 2008 ruling. The applicants aren't too positive that the decision can be reversed though:

"A lot of us are pretty convinced that the outcome of this new public proceeding has already been decided. It's going to be based on the CAIP decision."

CBC has the details:
