Thanks to Harry for first alerting me to this story :
"U.S. agents now have the authority to seize and retain laptops indefinitely, according to a new policy detailed in documents issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security."
I find it alarming that governments can take something that is yours without a search warrant, without just cause or arrest. Sure, it's not surprising to many, but that shouldn't make it any less disturbing. I guess, if you travel to the US, you should backup your data and accept that the US government may take the original files, or leave it at home. |

Infoworld magazine recently posted this request. I hope you'll read it and help out if you can. Imagine if this was your son, grandson, or nephew. Visit the link at the end for ways of donating. Thanks. Andrii Nikitin, a MySQL support engineer located in Ukraine, has asked for help from MySQLers and I've decided to open this up to the community at large. Andrii's son Ivan, who is 2 1/2, is in need of a bone marrow transplant operation. This will require going to a clinic in Europe that will not be covered by regular insurance. So Andrii has aksed to see if we could help raise funds. The cost is expected to be $150,000 - $250,000. A huge amount for an engineer from Ukraine to cover. Many MySQLers have kicked in to help out, but more is needed. Ivan's health has taken a turn for the worse recently and the issue is now quite pressing. This is an instance where if many people chip in and work together, we can make a huge difference in one person's life. It may even make the difference between life and death for Ivan.
I hope some of you who use MySQL or have young children will join me in making a donation today. http://weblog.infoworld.com/openresource/archives/2008/07/helping_one_of.html?source=rss |

CNN reports that, "Verizon Wireless said on Wednesday that it was putting its weight behind a Linux-based operating system that rivals Google Inc.'s ( GOOG) own Android offering."
Sometimes we're so focused on Linux on the Desktop that we forget that desktop computers aren't the only kind. Cellphones nowadays are more advanced than many computers from only a decade ago. Instant messaging, photos, video, music and scheduling are just a few of the features present in most phones sold today. You can already get phones with full keyboards and touch screens. It may not be long before desktop computers are used less than these phones for many tasks. It also seems to be one area where Microsoft is behind the market. Read the full article here. Thanks to Lisa, our newest LUG visitor, for telling us about this story. |
