Several PLUG members have written articles. The most recent are listed first. If there's something you'd like to review (a book or a distribution), let us know. If you're a budding writer, you can get some exposure and a free book, distro or other software product!

If you'd like to pass along comments to the author, use the same link above and we'll make sure they get them.

Damn Small Linux is a handy small Linux distro that can load from a business card size CD. It's is quite complete and is small enough that even dial-up users can get it in a few hours. What follows is a guide to gettings started for new Linux users. You can download Damn Small Linux from http://damnsmalllinux.org. Give it a a try.

“Though vaguely understanding that Knoppix could be used to repair Linux and Windows, I had no idea how to do this. So you can imagine my delight when I saw that O'Reilly published Knoppix Hacks...”

“I can say this after years of never quite being satisfied – arcane installs, multimedia limitations, persistent fine-tuning and web searches to make the system do what I wanted. But now we have Mandrake, Suse, Fedora, and my latest love, SimplyMEPIS, which absolutely shines.”

“I must admit, I'm a cynic when it comes to viewing documents on a computer screen. I long for the days when you could hold a manual in your hand while using the program. However, O'Reilly's online Safari Bookshelf has me re-thinking my stance.”

“There are many Linux books, but few of them focus on the user that just wants to get things done without becoming a technical expert. Moving To Linux promises to be just such a book. After carefully reviewing this 348-page manual, it's obvious Gagné has achieved this goal.”

“In this review, I tested Windows Me and the programs I like: mIRC, Firefox, Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Trillian, Acrobat Reader, Mailwasher Pro, Outlook Express, Web Express, Windows Media Player, Tweak UI and Irfanview.”

“You've just installed a new kernel. You successfully edited your lilo.conf file to properly boot the new kernel. What could go wrong? If you have an NVIDIA-based graphics card and use the drivers provided by NVIDIA, X11 isn't going to work!”

“I thought I would first select a real world (if slightly contrived) problem and see how quickly and easily I could find a solution using Safari's search functions. This search was done in Preview mode which allows the user to view smaller portions of the titles which are not on their Bookshelf.”

“Embarrassed to tell your friends you can't get Debian running on your machine? Fear not. There is an easy way.”

“Newcomers to Linux from Mac or Microsoft will feel quite at home. In fact, most will be more than comfortable. They will be delighted.”

“So take this article as maybe helpful to those of you who have only begun ripping their CDs. Those of you more experienced can laugh your way into the next article. Those of you that are new to this can follow along.”

“With each new release, Mandrake seems to raise the bar for what a desktop-oriented Linux distribution can and should be. From its humble beginning as a clone of Red Hat with enhancements to what is now easily considered a standalone distribution, Mandrake has often been a step ahead of the competition.”

“We've heard many times how good SuSE 8.1 is. And it is one of the best distros out there, ranked by some as number one. You can now get it free, not as an iso download, but as an ftp install. However, the effort involved in getting it free might not be worth it.”

“Towards the end of a testing frenzy I installed Mandrake 9.0 over SuSE 7.3, which had been installed over Debian 3.0 (stable), all in about 8 days. Here are a few quickly formed opinions about this very popular distro.”
